How to Create a Homemade Valentine's Card with Fringe www.thediyday.com @thediyday

Candy, roses, teddy bears, and heart shaped balloons, Valentine’s Day is just around the corner.

Although my husband and I don’t go all out and celebrate, I really enjoy making heart and love themed crafts and greeting cards, see my string-art-heart post here.

This year I’m making a variety of cards for my family and friends.  It’s important to note, all of my cards and crafts are easy DIYs.  Several of them are kid friendly too.

For this card I’m making a heart out of fringe.  Not many supplies are needed and I give alternatives to supplies that may not readily be on hand.

Supplies

Step One

First, print and cut-out a heart from a piece of paper (or hand draw the heart). Another alternative is to use foam hearts like I am using. I bought these at a dollar store and I’ve seen them at Target, Walmart, and Michael’s.

Step Two

Next, it’s time to cut strips of cardstock. The size of the cardstock strips can vary in length and height depending on the size of the heart as well as preference. My strips are 8.5″ x .75″ and I cut them with a paper trimmer. Then, with multi-bladed scissors, cut the strips 3/4 of the way up. Multi-blade scissors definitely speeds up the fringe creating process but a standard pair of scissors work just fine too.

Step Three

Now it’s time to add the frayed strips to the heart. I applied liquid glue to the remaining .25″ of the trimmed strip and applied the first layer to the bottom of the heart – working my way up in layers (slightly covering the previous row). On the last strip, apply glue as usual but also add small amounts of glue to the center of the fringe (where the heart dips down and the left and right portions of the heart join together). This is so the fringe sticks to the heart and doesn’t come off during the trimming process.

Step Four

Once the glue is completely dry, I trimmed the fringe to the shape of the heart and fluffed it with my fingers.

Step Five

Last, I used glue to adhere the heart to a 5×5 piece of folded kraft colored cardstock.
