As a kid, my mom was one of those moms that was big on saving everything.

If my brother, sisters, or I didn’t finish our meal, it wasn’t going in the trash. At some point, whether it was later on in the day or the following day, we were going to eating it. The same goes with soda. She even bought these lids for soda cans to “preserve the fizz” (didn’t work). If a piece of paper was partially written on, she had us save the unused portion; we’d solve math problems or write phone messages on the remainder.

She taught us right, don’t waste. Minus the soda bit, I still follow much of what she instilled in me as a child. The practice is part of my crafting life too.

I have a box full of leftover cardstock and scrapbook paper. I even save some pieces of paper that are no bigger than 2″ x 2″…and it’s organized. I have folders for each color and folders for blends of colors. Luckily, I have my mom’s organizing skills too.

Anyway, I decided to make a card from my leftover paper. Believe me, I’d have to make about 100 of these cards to make a dent in that organized pile! Check it out.

Supplies

Step One

I started this card by applying Distress Ink over the front of the white cardstock with the Blending Foam and Tool. I added more layers of ink to achieve the color I wanted, a dark grey. To give the card a bit of a textured look, I misted some water and rubbing alcohol over the ink with my spray misters. Allow the card to dry.

Step Two

Next, I gathered my scraps. I chose pieces and colors that complemented one another (pinks, blacks, whites). Then, with the banner die-cut, I ran each piece of paper through the die-cut machine. Because this cut is fairly basic, a die-cut isn’t necessary to create the card (it’s just way easier). Consider cutting the rectangle shape with a paper trimmer or scissors.

Step Three

Before adhering the banner shapes to the card, I decided to cut each banner so they weren’t all the same height. I’m glad I did so, I like how the different heights reveal more of the dark grey distress ink. Next, I adhered the banners. I hate the look that liquid glue creates when I make cards, so I used this type of adhesive instead.

Step Four

With some leftover white cardstock, I used my acrylic block, black Distress Ink (from step one) and stamped a greeting. I added a couple pink brads, and applied it to the card with 3D-Foam Adhesive. I really like how the foam adhesive sticks above the rest of the card.
