Greeting Card - The Half Square Triangle www.thediyday.com @thediyday

Back in the day when I was in third grade I remember going to a friend’s birthday party.

With a gift in tow I entered her house.  I’m not sure the theme of the party but I remember the balloons and the decorations were the prettiest blends of colors, reds, pinks, and oranges.  The cake frosting even matched.

Then it happened.  Her mother was blending all of these juices together.  Orange, fruit punch, lemonade, and pineapple juice all in one bowl.  I thought that was the grossest combination ever (but the color was pretty).

Well, I was adamant, I was not going to drink that funky concoction of liquids.  But after snacking on some chips and pizza I was thirsty.  There was nothing else to drink.  So, to quench my thirst I took a drink of the blend.

It was the best tasting drink I had in all of my nine years on the planet.  I was bummed I didn’t bother drinking this fruit juice earlier, I was missing out the entire time.

This brings me to the greeting card I made.  The colors remind of that birthday party.  Check it out!

Supplies

Step One

First, I laid out a piece of cardstock. Then I pressed some distress ink onto my application tool and applied it to the cardstock. I used Candied Apple Red, Abandoned Coral, Picked Raspberry, and Orange Pumpkin. These inks are so functional. To see what else these inks can do, visit my tutorial on Skillshare.

Step Two

Then, I cut the cardstock into strips and used my square punch on each strip. Afterward, I cut each square in half, at the corners, forming a triangle.

Step Three

Next, with a 5×7 card base, I applied adhesive to each triangle, and started shaping the geometric design. I considered using glue for this project but I didn’t want the card to start curling or bowing. To complete the design, I allowed the half square triangles to hang off of the edge of the card. Once all of the triangles were placed, I cut the hanging pieces with scissors.

Step Four

For the greeting portion of the card I grabbed two graduated circle die cuts and ran it through my die cut machine. I placed the smaller circle inside the larger one. Doing this allows the smaller circle to hollow out the larger one. Then with the smaller circle I lettered ‘Happy’ with a drawing pen and ‘Birthday’ with a dual brush pen.

Step Five

I placed some adhesive onto the hollowed out circle and centered it onto the card. For an elevated look, I added 3D Foam Tabs onto the back of the ‘Happy Birthday’ circle and placed that in the center of the other circle. Last, I placed the flat card base onto the folded greeting card.
